A Moment to Reflect -37

Some photographs can be planned and prepared for. Others require waiting for the right moment to arrive. But some simply involve quick reactions to seize the moment as it flashes by— such as this photograph of a heron suddenly rising out of a ditch in Merritt Island Wildlife Reserve.

Yesterday Henri Nouwen encouraged us to ‘celebrate the present’ (something of a double meaning in the context of birthdays perhaps.) Grasping the present, or ‘seizing the day,’ is a common theme in a great deal of poetry and literature as well as in the Bible.

But how exactly do you do it?

I think perhaps how we start our day might be the key to developing this mindset of grasping and celebrating the ‘now,’ as the little conversation below shows.

It is taken from one of my all-time favourite books—the children’s book “Winnie the Pooh” by A. A. Milne. It was first published on 14 October 1926 and is full of delightful, gentle humour, imagination and profound insight into human nature. Beneath its whimsical characters and stories lie many truths about life in general, including this little conversation between Pooh and Piglet.

“What day is it?” asked Pooh.
“It’s today,” squeaked Piglet.
“My favourite day,” said Pooh.”
